Cloud Computing is all the rage these days and after drilling into most of the different services and solutions I noticed that open source seems to help prevail and propel this cloud.vmware cloud computingBefore I go on my rant about open source and its relationship to the cloud let me define a few items. An absent feature since the ESX server, the addition with the ESXi firewall provides an additional layer of defense, functioning fundamentally being a packet filter. Enabled by default, the firewall blocks just about all incoming and outgoing traffic with exceptions which include DNS and DHCP. Configuring inbound and outbound TCP and UDP ports is an addition, as well as configuring specific rulesets inside ESXi Shell. VMware Installation Bundles (VIBs) can be employed to customize ports and protocols for any ESXi firewall, allowing to get a more tailored provider-host natural environment and infrastructure. The Host Image Profile Acceptance Levels for the VIBs have a wide range including VMware Certified, VMware Recognised, Partner Supported, and Neighborhood Supported.

Cloud security is, and always has been, at the top in the list of concerns with regard to businesses considering a move to a virtual platform. While it is understandable that many CEO’s and other corporate decision makers may not be always well-informed regarding each and every new development in cloud hosting security, it should be of some concern that many in the IT community are in the same boat. This is certainly most assuredly no moderate, but with the growth in cloud hosting this year, and every reason should be expected exponential growth construction business in the coming a long time, it would be a blunder to not recognize single-vendor cloud hosting as being the new frontier. A basic understanding of cloud security alleviates some of these concerns and promotes a healthier relationship between hosts and their clientele, and with the addition of the ESXi firewall to help vSphere 5, several security-related issues are addressed.

The good news is that over the next decade as businesses continue to embrace associate programs that cloud-based computing supplies, the wealth of talent within the IT community will gravitate as well. The first hurdle is to educate. With virtualization software developers like VMware catering to your concerns of both cloud serves and their clients, it’s not that most of a hurdle. Providers sought after another layer of defense, and VMware answered with the ESXi firewall. This addresses amongst other stuff, one of the potential problems involved with the lack of understanding regarding open ports along with the security risk therein. Issued, the lightweight hypervisor has little to attack with very few ports open, but the addition with the ESXi firewall can only be an aid to assuage any doubts about VMware’s commitment to customer satisfaction. Companies like VMware are also providing a multitude of tutorials on virtualization, furthering the effort to bring about a better know-how about cloud hosting and everything it has to offer.

Security can be of paramount importance. The move towards single-vendor cloud hosting and away from multiple providers or the standard corporate data centers drives the need for innovation and cooperation from this field. Does the addition of the ESXi firewall enable cloud hosting companies to provide better security? Of course it does indeed.
